Canterbury Garden Centres to help you prepare for Spring

How’s your garden looking? Mine is looking a bit ragged and rather bare.  I dug two borders over the summer and de-weeded here and there, which I think was very good of me, considering the general apathy with which I had previously viewed the jungle at the back of my house. I must say that I’m not a natural gardener. Instead, it was a combination of peer pressure and embarrassment that forced me to tackle the green, elbow-high mass of grass and nettles that was my garden.

Anyway, even though I’m a novice, I do know (because somebody told me) that now is the time to plant bulbs. When it stops raining, I fully intend to go bulb-crazy. Come springtime, I want my forlorn patch of muddy grass to be bordered with all kinds of colourful plants. Daffodils, especially.

I’ve recently discovered that garden centres are fantastic places – not just because you can buy plants, bulbs, gardening equipment and garden paraphernalia (gnomes, for example) – but also because the staff tend to know an awful lot more about gardening than I do, and are perfectly willing to spend plenty of time explaining to me the simplest of gardening concepts like how to use a rake.

Here’s a list of our local garden centres here in and around Canterbury:

Wyevale Gardens, just off the A28 at Chartham

J H Worrel & Son in Sturry Road

Canterbury Garden Centre, which is in Herne Common – a bit of a drive but well worth it

Gardeners Paradise in Stodmarsh

Thompsons Plant and Garden Centre in Petham
