CALLS for popular opinions on the regularity of rubbish collections could scupper proposals by three East Kent local authorities to impose fortnightly pick-ups.

District Councils at Dover, Shepway and Canterbury are planning to bring in a unified system of fortnightly household collection of rubbish in order to save money.

But this week local government and communities minister Bob Neill commended the idea of calling local referendum to discover if people wanted weekly or fortnightly rubbish collections. This followed a referendum run by Dartford council.

One of the main complaints against fortnightly collections is the smell of some deposited refuse but Dover hopes to overcome this by retaining a weekly collection of “smelly” kitchen waste.

Under the new scheme most households will be supplied with five collection containers including a wheeliebin.

We already have a fortnightly collection in Canterbury. I don't mind - I think it forces people to be less wasteful. But I think it causes a problem for the students. I've seen the ones in my road squeezing extra bin bags into my black bin the night before collection. It's better than fly-tipping, I suppose.
