The Rt Rev Justin Welby has replaced Lord Williams, who resigned in December, during the 'Confirmation of Election' at St Paul's Cathedral.
The 57-year-old Bishop of Durham is taking up the most senior role in the Church of England following the announcement of his appointment in November.
Other formal stages remain before Rev Welby begins his public ministry, including an act of 'homage' to The Queen.
The archbishop's public inauguration of his new role - the enthronement - will take place at Canterbury Cathedral on Thursday 21 March.
